Join us in our call to the Premier to say the words: "I will not privatise our electricity."
Electricity unions and Save Our Services have committed to continue their campaign against the privatisation of Western Power and other publicly owned electricity assets in the lead up to the State election. Until the Barnett Government commits to a promise to stop exploring the sale of Western Power as an option to plug its debts, we will continue this important fight to protect what belongs to us.
Our assets belong to us. There is no turning back once they're gone.
Privatisation has meant higher electricity prices and poorer services, as well as fewer jobs and apprenticeships. It's a short-term solution that has long-term implications. And it's not their's to sell. It belongs to us.
We're asking the Premier to make a promise to stop threatening our electricity utilities with privatisation.
It has become increasingly clear that the Barnett Government intends to abandon the state’s long held responsibility to provide reliable and safe electricity to Western Australian households and businesses. Use Your Power recently commissioned research on the impact on the WA Budget of electricity privation which can be viewed or downloaded here.
Over the last few months, the state government has flagged its intention to privatise Horizon Power’s Pilbara poles and wires, as well as privatise Western Power. Now, Energy Minister Mike Nahan is directing Synergy to close power stations.
If these extreme changes are implemented, it will mean that the state government will no longer be involved in generating or distributing power in the north of the state. Those communities will be completely dependent on the private sector for their electricity. Expect prices to go up, jobs and apprenticeships to be cut and preventative maintenance to become a thing of the past, as the new private operator(s) seek to maximise profits.
